We had the pleasure of talking with Silver Medalist Sasha Cohen in anticipation of the Kansas City Star's on Ice Performance!
KCParent: We are excited about Stars on Ice coming to Kansas City! Can you tell us about the show?
Sasha: I'm excited too. I love Stars on Ice and I love touring! I've been touring with Stars on Ice for four years and have been to Kansas City before. Stars on Ice 2010 has the biggest U.S. cast EVER with a great variety of music, costumes, and programs. It is a great family show. There are twelve full time cast members and many guest stars in every city.
KCParent: You are a remarkable skater and we love to watch you perform. How did you get started?
Sasha: I participated in gymnastics when I was young, and I decided to start skating at age 7. I loved it and kept taking more and more lessons, learning and improving, and eventually competing.
KCParent: Do you have advice for parents with children who want to pursue a competitive sport or talent like music or acting?
Sasha: My mother was always very supportive, but ultimately it was my personal drive to compete. If your child really wants to excel and compete, do your best to encourage them. Expose your children to a lot of opportunities so they can discover their interests and know what they want to pursue.
KCParent: What was the highlight of your skating career?
Sasha: Definitely winning the Silver Medal at the Olympics.
KCParent: We know you have many interests beyond skating, do you have any great new endeavors coming up?
Sasha: I'm touring through the end of June, then I skate in Asia, then this fall I'm participating in televised skating programs on NBC.
KCParent: Your young fans always ask us to inquire about your favorites, can you share your favorites with us?
Sasha: Favorite Pizza - Meat & Mushroom, Ice Cream - Cookie and Cream (I LOVE Ice Cream), and Movie - Wedding Crashers
KCParent: Do you have any advice for children and teens who want to pursue their interests as you have pursued skating?
Sasha: You need to establish balance and remember to keep up with school. No matter how much you love your interest, remember there are ups and downs on everything. You have to persevere. I am constantly learning to get back up and not give up.
KCParent: Sasha Cohen wrote an autobiography recommended for children ages 8 and up. The book tells of her journey from a seven year old skater to an Olympic Champion.
