The Stinky Cheese Man

by

The Paul Mesner Puppet Studio is getting ready to celebrate 25 years of entertaining and educating Kansas City kids. My girls and I have been to several productions and always have a great time! We recently saw their performance of “The Stinky Cheese Man” and all three of us give it two enthusiastic thumbs up!

The show is based on the book by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith and remains faithful to the book that millions of kids know and love. The night before the show the girls and I sat down and read the book. While it’s a fun read, it can be a bit confusing. The show was a perfect way to bring the book to life and make what we read that much more understandable. I was a bit worried that Tori (10) would find the show a bit too “young” for her, but the opposite was true. The show appeals to all ages and has jokes for both the younger set and those a bit older. And, while not giving everything away, you’re kids will LOVE and be amazed by the puppet of the Giant that makes an appearance at the end of the show.

After the show they offered a puppet making workshop where kids could make either a Stinky Cheese Man puppet or a wolf puppet (or, as mine chose, both). We weren’t able to stay and make the puppets, but they had kits that we could make at home. At only $2.50 per kit, it was a great deal and a fun way to make the fun from the show last longer. In fact, our Stinky Cheese Man puppet has lasted well over a week and is still going strong performing many a show.

As a former teacher, I love anything that ties in with children’s literature, and every one of Paul Mesner’s shows fits this bill. They offer great shows year round, so be sure to check out their site for the upcoming season and make it a priority to see a show.

Tip for a Fun Day: After the show, the girls and I stayed downtown and visited the Toy and Miniature Museum. On the way home we enjoyed milkshakes from Steak-n-Shake…a perfect summer day!
