K D's Books

241 Southeast Main St., Lees Summit, MO

Two decades ago, Cheryl Collier opened K D’s Books as a used bookstore. Now, with the exception of a used section of all genres, the store’s inventory is new and targeted to the 12 and under crowd. Educational toys are also available. Children wild about trains will enjoy playing with the train table, and if they’re lucky, catch a glimpse of a real train. The cozy store is located just across from train tracks where Collier says the train goes rumbling by many times a day.

Rainy Day Books

Rainy Day Books has called Kansas City home for 35 years. The bookstore offers books for all ages. Parents of both reluctant and exceptional readers will find this store to be a valuable resource. Staff will help choose the right book to get your youngster to love reading or keep your reader challenged with age appropriate material. Check the store’s website for events. Reading Reptile

From the moment you enter Reading Reptile, you’ll know it’s a children’s bookstore like no other. Owners Debbie Pettid and Pete Reptile opened shop in 1988. As you walk through the door, you’ll be transported into a magical world of reading. Paper mache storybook characters decorate the store, bringing stories to life. From board books to young adult books, the shop is brimming with good reads. Young children love the play area, mechanical horse and “secret” cabinet underneath a book display. In August of 2010, the shop added to its charm by opening a small bakery, Le Petit Rouge. Cupcakes and dainties are available for purchase. Check the store’s website for upcoming events.

The Learning Tree

At the Learning Tree, you’ll find exceptional service from staff that can help you find the perfect gift for that special child in your life. According to owner Jonny Girson, approximately 20 percent of the inventory is dedicated to books. Your children will delight in sampling both toys and books. The store’s website is a wonderful resource to select toys based on age or price range. The online book selection is limited, giving you the perfect excuse to visit the store.

Toy and Book

303 Main St., Parkville, MO

Toy and Book opened in the fall of 2009. The store offers new and gently used children’s books and toys. At this shop, you can trade in gently used toys and books for store credit. Owner Rachel Atwood likens shopping in the store to going on a treasure hunt ,as you never know what you’ll find. Many of the toys are associated with popular storybook characters. Toy and Book is open on Fridays and Saturdays or by appointment.
