The long-awaited exhibit, Maya: The Great Jaguar Rises, is now open at Union Station (thru Jan. 1, 2023).
Visitors begin their journey with a short film explaining the history and mystery of the Mayan civilization. A remarkably modern culture at home deep in tropical rainforests boasted cities, farmland, and a heritage that is still alive today. Mayan descendants carry on many traditions and the identity of the ancient culture through their modern lives in Central America.
Once the film ends, the screen lifts, and visitors enter the exhibit hall where pottery, idols, models, and projected images and literature tell the story of the Mayan Culture. We saw 300 original artifacts during our visit, telling the story of Mayan citizens. We learned about their religion, culture, daily way of life, architecture, and family structures.
Children were engaged in the hands-on, immersive aspects of the exhibits as they were able to touch replica artifacts, interact with digital displays, decipher hieroglyphs, and learn about the archaeology that led to the discovery of this ancient civilization.
We spent about an hour experiencing the exhibit. I recommend it for ages 12 and up.
