Munching Potato Chips Across KC

by

March 14 is National Potato Chip Day, a truly American holiday. After all, we eat 1.2 billion pounds of potato chips annually. Kansas Citians can enjoy chips with a local touch thanks to these local businesses:

Dining Out

Local restaurants make delicious homemade chips as the perfect side dish for your favorite lunch. These are our three family-friendly faves:

The Corner Café has been serving comfort food famously for decades. One of their most popular sides to accompany a tasty burger or sandwich is fresh homemade potato chips. (Locations: Riverside -  4541 NW Gateway Ave., 816.741.2570; Liberty - 8301 N. Flintlock Rd.,  816.415.0050; Independence - 4215 S. Little Blue Pkwy., 816.350.70000)

Pigwich (2618 Guinotte Ave., Kansas City, MO, 816.200.1639) celebrates local food from local farmers with healthy and humane practices, and their food is undeniably delicious too. They specialize in a variety of sandwiches from Philly cheesesteaks to pork meatball sandwiches and more, and the side of homemade potato chips is the perfect accompaniment to their diner-style lunch.

Coach’s is a popular neighborhood bar and grill with tasty traditional pub foods, including a fabulous pulled pork sandwich, classic Philly and fried chicken, to name a few. As an appetizer or side dish, their homemade chips are a winner for the entire family. (Locations: Coach's Overland Park - 9089 W. 135th St., 913.897.7070; Coach's Kansas City - 414 W. 103rd St.,  816.941.2286)

Enjoying Chips at Home

For delicious homemade chips, stop by the Price Chopper grocery store at 151st & Metcalf, where you can watch as potato chips are made fresh daily on their in-store potato chip machine. Free samples are offered, and bags of chips are fried and sold daily in a variety of flavors, including classic and sweet potato.

Local grocers stock Guy’s Potato Chips, a Kansas City original. In 1938, Guy Caldwell began to prepare and sell peanuts using a peanut roaster in the back of a Kansas City storeroom. Eventually the business grew, and he began to expand, adding potato chips to the brand. One of the most popular local brands of chips, Guy’s chips come in a variety of flavors. True to their Kansas City roots, their Legendary Barbeque Potato Chips are one of the most popular and best loved varieties.
