I’m sure you’ve heard Kansas described as “flat” and “boring” at least once. It’s often overlooked and underappreciated, labeled as a flyover state. However, if you take a closer look, you will find that Kansas is filled with incredible and unique destinations that offer a mix of natural beauty, history and family-friendly fun. From towering rock formations and scenic prairies to unique parks and interactive sites, the Sunflower State has so much to offer. Whether you’re exploring geological wonders, learning about local history or just enjoying the outdoors, these must-see places in Kansas are sure to change your mind about how “flat” and “boring” it is.

The Flint Hills, one of Kansas’s most iconic landscapes, stretches across the eastern part of the state and offers incredible views of the tallgrass prairie. Take a hike on the Konza Prairie trails, take a scenic drive through the Flint Hills National Scenic Byway or spend the day on the water at Chase State Fishing Lake.
Elk City State Park
Elk City State Park, nestled near the shores of Elk City Lake, is a true gem for outdoor enthusiasts and families. The park features a variety of hiking trails of varying difficulty levels, many of which lead to beautiful overlooks of the lake. While you are here, you can fish, swim and enjoy picnics along the water’s edge.
This park is home to one of the most unique hiking trails (and our personal favorite) in the entire state. The Elk River trail is 15 miles each way and is full of rock scrambles, tunnels, tons of wildlife and stunning views of the lake. If you are looking for a beautiful and unique spot to enjoy the outdoors, Elk City State Park is a great place to explore Kansas’ wild beauty.
Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park
Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park offers a glimpse into a landscape unlike any other in the state. The park is known for its dramatic chalk formations, shaped by millions of years of natural erosion. Enjoy the park on the self-guided hiking paths or take a guided tour to get up close to the unusual formations.
Mushroom Rock State Park
At only 5 acres, Mushroom Rock State Park is the smallest state park in Kansas. Although small, this state park is a fascinating place to visit and is famous for its unique rock formations that resemble giant mushrooms. These sandstone formations were created by erosion over millions of years and are a fun, interactive place for kids to explore and climb.
Wilson Lake
Known as the “Clearest Lake in Kansas,” Wilson Lake offers an unforgettable experience of the state’s natural beauty. Located in the Smoky Hills, Wilson Lake’s turquoise waters are perfect for swimming, boating and fishing. The rugged limestone cliffs and rocky shores provide a stunning backdrop for camping and hiking along scenic trails like the Rocktown Trail.
Castle Rock
Castle Rock, a towering limestone formation in the plains of western Kansas, is an impressive sight that rises dramatically from the landscape. Named for its castle-like appearance, this landmark stands as a testament to the state’s unique geology and history. As you climb and explore the formation, you’ll forget you are in the Midwest. Keep an eye out for fossils in the rock bed, as this site is home to some of the state’s most unique prehistoric finds.
Monument Rocks
Monument Rocks, also known as the Chalk Pyramids, is a National Natural Landmark and one of the state’s most iconic natural attractions. These towering chalk formations rise up to 70 feet and contain fossils from the Cretaceous period. I highly recommend catching a sunset here if you can.
Coronado Heights
This historic, stone, castle-like structure, built in the 1930s atop a scenic hill, offers panoramic views of the Smoky Hills region. Named for the Spanish explorer Coronado, this spot provides an enjoyable place for a picnic, with trails, picnic tables and stone benches scattered around. Kids will love exploring the castle ruins and climbing up to view the surrounding landscape. Coronado Heights is a beautiful spot that combines history, family fun and breathtaking views.
Rock City
Probably my personal favorite place in Kansas, Rock City is a collection of over 200 massive sandstone boulders scattered across a field. Located just outside of Minneapolis, Kan., these giant spherical rocks are perfect for climbing and exploring. A geological wonder and a true hidden gem, this is the perfect spot for families looking to spend some time outdoors exploring the wonders of the Sunflower State.
Smoky Valley Railroad
For a journey back in time, the Smoky Valley Railroad offers an enchanting ride on a historic steam locomotive through the beautiful Kansas countryside. This scenic railroad ride runs between the towns of Abilene and Enterprise and gives passengers a glimpse of Kansas’ rich railroad history. Both kids and adults will enjoy the vintage cars, the sounds of the steam engine and the chance to relax and watch the landscape roll by. The Smoky Valley Railroad is a memorable experience that combines history with the charm of the Kansas prairie.
Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve
Located in the heart of the Flint Hills, this preserve protects one of the last remaining expanses of tallgrass prairie in North America. Hike the scenic trails to experience the rolling hills, native wildflowers, herd of bison and other native wildlife. The preserve also offers a glimpse into Kansas’ ranching heritage with its historic 19th-century limestone barn and ranch house. Don’t forget to stop by the Visitors Center to learn about the Kansas prairie and earn your Junior Ranger badge.
