Take time to explore some of Kansas City’s most beloved gems in the spring!
Multigenerational Trip in Kansas City
I love helping families plan unforgettable multigenerational trips!anna There is something uniquely special about grandparents and grandchildren playing together, discovering together and making memories together.anna The Country Club Plaza in Kansas City is the perfect homebase for your next multi-generation adventure with your family!
The Country Club Plaza comprises 15 blocks of shopping, dining and historic architecture in the heart of Kansas City.anna Its location makes it ideal for exploring much of what Kansas City has to offer.anna In its immediate vicinity are numerous parks and museums, plus it is convenient to downtown Kansas City.
Places to Stay
The Plaza offers accommodations for any budget and experience.anna There are beautiful and historic luxury hotels, such as the Fontaine and the Raphael Hotel, with amazing views of the Plaza and the Kansas City skyline, luxury accommodations and amenities and fine dining options.anna For families looking for more space and a more budget-friendly option, the Hampton Inn & Suites and Springhill Suites by Marriott are fantastic options, both located on the Northwest side of the Plaza.
Other unique options include quaint and welcoming bed and breakfast accommodations, such as the beloved Southmoreland on the Plaza, and numerous units on private rental sites like VRBO and Airbnb.
Dining
The Plaza boasts more than 30 restaurants, serving a variety of cuisines and providing a plethora of dining experiences.
Enjoy a nice, fresh farm-to-table meal at Rye, a casual and fun family dinner at Chuy’s or the Cheesecake Factory or a unique Asian meal at P. F. Chang’s.anna Grab a snack or treat at Auntie Anne’s – Cinnabon or Cupcake a la Mode, ice cream at Coldstone Creamery or coffee from Starbucks.
For a finer dining experience, try the Capital Grille for a delicious steak or McCormick & Schmick’s for seafood.anna Another KC favorite is patio dining on the Plaza, and 0Gram & Dun is a local favorite for fresh air and food!
Things to Do
Kansas City has no shortage of fun and unique experiences for families!anna The Plaza area is central to many of these attractions.
Parks
Kansas City is famous for its parks and fountains.anna Take advantage of a beautiful spring day and head to Jacob Loose Park, the Ewing and Muriel Kauffman Memorial Garden or Robert Gillham Park, all located in the Plaza area.anna Grab barbecue to go from Fiorella’s Jack Stack on the Plaza and enjoy a picnic lunch and some outdoor family fun!
Museums
One of my favorite museums in Kansas City, and one that is perfect for families with a wide range of ages, is the National Museum of Toys and Miniatures.anna This museum, south of the Plaza, is the home of the world’s largest collection of miniatures and one of the largest public collections of historic toys.anna Grandparents and children alike will enjoy the nostalgia of exploring toys throughout the decades.
Located just east of the Plaza are the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.anna Both museums provide families hours of exploring various styles of art, including larger-than-life sculptures on the grounds of the Nelson-Atkins.
Venturing north of the Plaza, toward downtown Kansas City, are the National World War I Museum and Memorial and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum.anna These both provide grandparents the opportunity to recall and share some of our nation’s history with their grandchildren.
Downtown Kansas City
Yet another way to spend a day in Kansas City is the Hallmark Crown Center in Downtown Kansas City.anna On the weekends, parking at Crown Center is free, and, even during the week, parking is free with validation.anna Between the Skylink and the KC Streetcar, you can park your car and leave it!anna
The Skylink connects Crown Center and Union Station via an elevated pedestrian walkway completely protected from the elements.anna The KC Streetcar runs from Union Station to the River Market with 16 stops in between.
Crown Center
Crown Center is a bustling shopping center, containing shops and restaurants.anna A local favorite is Fritz’s.anna This train-themed restaurant delivers burgers and fries to your table via model trains!
Additionally, Crown Center houses the Coterie Theater that offers shows with a young audience in mind.anna It also offers limited-time attractions throughout the year, so make sure to check out the schedule.
Two major attractions located in Crown Center are Legoland Discovery Center and Sea Life Kansas City Aquarium.anna Legoland contains 12 interactive, Lego-themed play zones.anna Geared especially for children ages 3-10, the wide range of interactive activities really appeal to the whole family!anna Sea Life will transport you to an underwater world, where you can discover the beauty and wonder of ocean life.anna Typically, you can purchase tickets to both attractions for a small discount.
Union Station
Just a short walk on the Skylink will take you to Union Station.anna Built in 1914, it is a beautiful building with many traces of the Railroad Age.anna With the historic background and the numerous entertainment opportunities, you can easily spend an entire day here!
Catch a movie at the Extreme Screen Theater or the Planetarium, explore and interact with the scientific world at Science City, enjoy watching the model trains or even learn about a unique subject from a national traveling exhibit.
KC Streetcar
If the weather is nice, you can even plan on exploring the KC Streetcar route!anna Take the Skylink to Union Station and head outside to the streetcar stop.anna A streetcar leaves Union Station every 10-15 minutes, so you never have to wait long.
Adventure Awaits
As you can see, Kansas City is the perfect location for your family’s next grand adventure!

A Kansas City Staycation
Dear Jackson,
My mom said you get to stay with us a whole weekend! I can’t wait to show you all my favorite places since we’ve moved here. Kansas City is an absolutely incredible place to live and explore, and I am thrilled to share it with you during the three days you will be here.
———————————————————–
Here’s our itinerary:anna
Day 1
Downtown or bust! Crown Center is a bustling mecca of family fun and where we’ll start our adventures. Named after the famous Hallmark logo, Crown Center is not only home to the famous greeting cards’ world headquarters, but also Kaleidoscope, a free arts and crafts wonderland where kids like us can crank out a homemade puzzle along with other fun projects using Hallmark’s manufacturing leftovers! Afterward, we will venture to Crown Center Showplace to take in this season’s featured kids exhibit. Then we’ll sit back and enjoy an hour-long Broadway-style show at KC’s premiere children’s theater, the Coterie. I have no doubt we’ll have worked up a huge appetite after all our adventures, but don’t worry! Fritz’s Railroad Restaurant will deliver lunch (no, literally … a motorized train will bring our food order to the table!). If we have room for something sweet, we can follow our noses up to Chip’s Chocolate Factory where more than 40 flavors of decadent fudge are being whipped up from scratch—yum!
The fun won’t stop there. A hop, skip and a jump away from Crown Center is Union Station, Kansas City’s beloved train-station-turned-family-attraction-extraordinaire. Within its walls are Science City and the Arvin Gottleib Planetarium, places where we can get up close and personal with simple machines, a dino dig, makers space and nature center and then sit back and view the farthest points in the sky. And thinking of stars, they’ll probably be visible outside soon, too, so it will be a perfect time to take in the view of KC’s gorgeous skyline as we venture home after an incredible day of fun.
Day 2
After a day of urban excitement, I can’t wait to take you to Worlds of Fun, Kansas City’s own 236-acre amusement park themed after Jules Verne’s famous book Around the World in 80 Days. Divided into five sections (Scandinavia, Africa, Europa, the Orient and Americana), the park lets us globetrot to various shows, rides and attractions all in one day! There are rides like the Mamba for the thrill seekers in our group. And we might even spy a member or two of the Peanuts Gang in Planet Snoopy, a section where little guests can find rides just their size. Pounding the pavement is sure to make us break a sweat, but that’s just fine by me because we can cool off and catch some waves in the afternoon at Worlds of Fun’s sister park, Oceans of Fun. Thankfully, it’s easy to hop from one park to the other. My favorite spot is the wave pool. You’re going to love it. Surf’s up!
Day 3
Two modern city kids like us don’t need to wonder what life was like in bygone eras. We can experience it, thanks to exceptional local programs spread out all over the Kansas City metro. I’ll even let you take your pick! We could hop aboard a stagecoach at Olathe’s own Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm; step back into pre-Civil war era life at Missouri Town 1855, a 30-acre living history museum with more than 25 historical buildings on site; get schooled on local life, Depression-era style, at Shawnee Town 1929; or try our hands at turn-of-the-century farm life at Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead in Overland Park, a place where young guests can bottle feed goats, hop aboard a pint-size pedal tractor, take a pony ride and even fish with an old-school fishing pole at the local fishing spot.anna
After all that old-fashioned fun, we can indulge in modern comforts, tasty grub and high-tech gaming at Shawnee’s Incredible Pizza, a food and game attraction that is about far more than pizza (although they have more than 100 flavor combinations of that, too!). Their colossal buffetannaincludes hot dogs, soups, salads and pasta (not to mention a taco bar!) and is sure to please even the pickiest of eaters. But the fun doesn’t stop there. After we eat, it’s playtime. Laser tag, bumper cars, video games, rides and attractions await!
————————————————————
As you can see, there is so much to do here in Kansas City, and this is only the tip of the iceberg! I guess there’s just one thing left to do … you’ll have to plan another trip here soon after so I can show you some more of my favorite KC places to eat, play and explore!
Sincerely,
Masonanna

4 Fun Ideas for a KC Spring Break Staycation
Destination #1: Downtown
Kansas City’s largest, most interactive science museum, Science City at Union Station, offers something for visitors of all ages. Little ones especially love three experiential, hands-on exhibitions: “Let’s Play!” designed especially for babies, crawlers and toddlers with multiple sensory and role-playing activities, “Creative Corner” where art meets science in a whole new way with cool interactive activities and “All Aboard” that celebrates Union Station’s rail history.
Sea LifeannaAquariumannatransports guests intoannaan amazing underwater worldannawith up-close views of more than 5,000 sea creatures! Next door to Sea Life you’ll findannaLegoland Discovery Center in Crown Center, annaa larger-than-life attraction.
National World War I Museum and Memorialannais not only a Kansas City landmark, but an American landmark. The museum tells the story ofannathe Great War through interactive displays, thought-provoking films and eyewitness testimonies. With family guides and hands-on exhibits, the museum is an educational attraction for all ages.
Destination #2: Johnson County, KS
Urban Air Adventure Parkanna(locations in Overland Park and Lenexa) is our favorite local trampoline park. Offering much more than trampolines, this is a great place to spend a day! Urban Air gives a generous helping of frenetic fun with attractions like Kidzone and Urban Air Warrior Course.
RoKC Olathe is one of the metro’s newest attractions. Adventurers have a blast bouldering and rock climbing on walls up to 50 feet tall! The facility offers introductory classes and walk-in programs for beginners and experts alike, with a variety of styles for every skill level and interest.
KidScape at the Johnson County Museumannais a whimsical, hands-on, child-sized city. Children time travel to different periods and communities from the region’s past. They enjoy pretend play as they work on the farm, perform at the theater or the puppet show, teach in the school, deliver the mail, care for patients at the hospital and fry up some burgers at the diner.
Destination #3: Swope Park
Explore theannaKansas City Zoo. Travel all over the world without ever leaving the Kansas City Zoo. Take a spin on the Endangered Species Carousel, ride the train, then continue your journey on the tram to the award-winning Africa exhibit. Visit Helzberg Penguin Plaza, the Discovery Barn and Stingray Bay. Stroll down Tiger Trail and get nose to nose with primates, orangutans and tigers—and be sure to explore Australia too.
Near the Kansas City Zoo, Go Ape offers treetop and private group adventures. This is a fully immersive experience combining obstacles and zip lines for the adventure enthusiast.

Kansas City mom Kristina Light enjoys taking her girls on adventures all over her hometown.
Autumn Adventures … About an Hour Away
Autumn inspires the adventurer in me to seek out new experiences and learn new things. Locally, these two fantastic day trips offer new larks perfect for the family scrapbook.
Biking the Katy Trail and Adventures with Alpacas
Did you know that America’s longest recreational rail trail runs 240 miles, mostly along the northern bank of the Missouri River right through the heart of Missouri? The trail follows the right-of-way of the former Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad.
A visit to Missouri’s Pleasant Hill and Holden gives visitors a chance for unforgettable bike rides, alpaca adventures and small town charm.
The Rock Island Spur of Katy Trail State Park, with the trailhead in Pleasant Hill, is a 47.5-mile trail across the west-central portion of the state. Visitors may bike, hike or ride on horseback (bring your own horses or bikes), enjoying nature and Missouri history. Along this portion of the trail, you will go over and under bridges, cross Big Creek and see wildflowers and wildlife seasonally. The trail is built on the former corridor of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad (commonly called the Rock Island line).
Just four miles from the state park, you can enjoy a now-trendy tourist attraction. Have you noticed how you can hardly stroll through Target without spotting an Alpaca on a shirt, socks or water bottle? The fluffy creatures have captured the hearts of many children (and adult women—let’s be honest), and thanks to a local family, you can enjoy an incredible one-of-a-kind alpaca experience in person.
Green Meadows Alpaca Ranch in Holden is a local ranch, Airbnb and agritourism attraction we have come to love. Melissa and Jason Ashley operate the ranch, along with their kids, and they welcome guests to stay overnight or come for an afternoon Paca Picnic.
The scenic farm is home to 33 Suri and Huacaya alpacas. Suris are known for their twisted strings and locks, and Huacayas are fluffy and soft. Both are beautiful, and all alpacas have their own unique personality. The farm is also home to two llamas, one llama/alpaca cross, goats, sheep, turkey, guineas, chickens, ducks, cats and dogs.
I recently stayed overnight at the beautiful log cabin-style Airbnb with my oldest daughter and her two best friends to celebrate her birthday. Overnight guests stay in luxurious bedrooms, or they may opt to bring a tent and camp outside. Guests get to feed the animals a few times during their stay, spray down the alpacas to cool them off if it’s hot, and pet and hold them. Holding a brand-new baby goat was a highlight of our visit. We learned about the different types of alpacas and other animals, their fleeces, their care and their individual stories and personalities.
If you’d like to make a day trip rather than an overnight, consider a Paca Picnic where two to 10 guests get to feed the alpacas and bring their own picnic to enjoy on the farm.
Nearby, visit downtown Holden. Walkers 5 & 10 Variety Store is a fun stop that sells many novelty items, including a variety of old-fashioned sodas and candies. The town is also home to antique stores, an ice cream shop and many restaurants. Autumn is our favorite time for a day trip, but the farm—and the town—are open year-round.
The First Lady of Flight and the Most Haunted Town in Kansas
A visit to Atchison is perfect in the autumn. The small town is situated on the bluffs of the Missouri River defying the stereotype of Kansas prairie land with its deep, rolling hills and beautiful trees. Famous as the birthplace of the First Lady of Flight, Amelia Earhart, and the most haunted town in Kansas, the destination offers much to see on a day trip getaway.
Begin your visit at the Atchison Visitors Center and Historical Society Museum. The visitors center provides free information on local attractions. If you have questions about sites, shopping or restaurants, the staff is very helpful. The museum presents exhibits on Amelia Earhart, Lewis and Clark, the town of Atchison, Native American artifacts, the origin of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad and more.
On weekends through October, you can visit the Atchison Rail Museum and enjoy a ride aboard the 12-inch-gauge train. A local train club runs a model steam train and a gas electric train. After riding the train, explore historic rail cars and engines, including a steam locomotive engine, more than one caboose, passenger cars, freight cars and a snowplow. For train lovers, this is one stop you don’t want to miss!
A visit to Atchison without touring Amelia Earhart’s childhood home would be like a visit to St. Louis without seeing the Gateway Arch. When you tour the Amelia Earhart Birthplace (AmeliaEarhartMuseum.org), you will find that the home has been restored to its original décor by the Ninety-Nines, the organization of female pilots that operates the museum. Amelia, nicknamed Meelie, was born in the home built by her grandparents and lived there throughout most of her childhood. The museum displays many Earhart artifacts and model planes, but the one I found most interesting was Meelie’s Coaster, a replica of the coaster Amelia built with her sister when they were young girls. They attached it to the roof of a small shed and went for a ride. She got hurt but was undaunted, declaring that it was just like flying and she dreamed of flying someday. Throughout the home you will see paintings and sculptures of Earhart and her planes, but my favorite was the painting in the upper hall by Robert Wilson showing Earhart with her first airplane, a Kinner Canary, purchased on her 24th birthday. The home is inspirational for young people as it tells the story of one of Kansas’ most famous women.
Another famous Earhart attraction in town is the Warnock Lake Park/Amelia Earhart Earthwork (178620 274th Rd.). The Amelia Earhart Earthwork is a one-acre portrait of Earhart created by Kansas artist Stan Herd in 1997. Permanent plantings, stone and natural materials create a portrait of Atchison’s legendary lady. Drive into the park and you’ll find a viewing deck to take photos of the portrait.
Thanks to special tours offered at historic homes (VisitAtchison.com/highlight_type/haunted-atchison) and through Haunted Atchison Trolley Tours, autumn is a favorite time to visit the town for those who love a spooky story. The trolley’s fall weekend tours carry visitors throughout the historic town to hear legendary haunting tales of the past (VisitAtchison.com/highlight/atchison-trolley-tours).
