Are you ready to embark on a day trip or add some fun to your westward journey into Kansas? These towns are perfect additions to your itinerary!
Wamego
Wamego, Kan., is a charming town approximately 1.5 hours west of Kansas City metro and 25 minutes east of Manhattan, Kan. It’s an ideal destination for a day trip, especially if you’re already planning a weekend in Manhattan.
Wamego was platted in 1866 and named after a Native American Potawatomi chief. The town retains its small-town charm, with locals gathering on Main Street throughout the day.
We arrived in Wamego around 9:00 a.m. and parked near City Park. We then walked to Paramour Coffee, a cozy coffee shop where we were greeted with smiles. We decided to take our coffees to go and return to City Park to stretch our legs.

The Wamego City Park was an excellent surprise! This massive 15-acre park boasts a well-thought-out layout. It features the Dutch Mill, a 1879 stone windmill, along with play equipment for all ages. There was even a running children’s train led by volunteers! Our oldest spent about 40 minutes riding the train repeatedly because it was so much fun. Our younger children loved the swings and the variety of playground equipment.

After leaving the park, we headed to the Wamego Oz Museum, which houses over 2,000 Wizard of Oz artifacts! The quick museum tour was aimed more toward older children and adults. We found it fascinating since we grew up on The Wizard of Oz.
After the Oz Museum, we grabbed a bite to eat at Toto’s TacOz, a casual, family-friendly restaurant near the museum. We were able to walk in without reservations and were immediately seated. We enjoyed an assortment of tacos and burritos, as well as an order of delicious nachos that we all shared.
After lunch, we had some time to spare, so we walked around the town’s main street, Lincoln Ave. We had already noticed the Toto statues around town, and our children enjoyed finding more along the street.

As we walked along Lincoln Ave., we made several stops at small boutiques and souvenir shops. We also visited the Oz Winery, which offered two free samples and reasonably priced wine flights, gourmet chocolates and cheese.
We continued exploring Lincoln Ave. and stopped for an ice cream treat at Bird’s Creamery. They had a wide variety of flavors to choose from, as well as specialty items like their Flying Monkey Tornado Shake.
Wamego is a charming small town that offers numerous hidden gems — not all of which we got to see on our trip, regrettably. Next time, we plan to visit the Columbian Theater for a live show and explore more of the town’s delectable restaurants as well as its water park.
Lindsborg
Lindsborg, Kan., is another great day trip option! Located approximately 3 hours west of the Kansas City metro and known for its strong Swedish heritage, Lindsborg is an ideal add-on for travelers heading west to Colorado or embarking on long weekend trips to Wichita or Hutchinson. You can spend anywhere from a few hours to a whole weekend exploring and enjoying Lindsborg.

As we drove to Lindsborg, we made our first stop at the Coronado Heights Castle. Nestled within the Smoky Hills, the castle overlooks Lindsborg and the surrounding area from a vantage point 300 feet above the valley floor. It is said that Francisco Vasquez de Coronado and his men gazed upon the prairie from this lookout point. While some of the steps posed a slight challenge for our younger children, the castle was an awe-inspiring experience.

After exploring the castle and its surroundings for about an hour, we ventured into town for lunch at The White Peacock. This charming coffee shop boasts the friendliest staff we’d encountered. We were thoroughly impressed by their extensive menu options and decided to indulge in waffles and coffee. Our children were particularly delighted by the kids’ coloring area. They loved the idea of eating and coloring simultaneously!
After lunch, we ventured out onto Main Street to explore. We browsed several boutiques, noticing the Swedish-inspired themes throughout our walk. We couldn’t resist stopping to admire the Wild Dala Horses all around town!
Along Main Street, we stumbled upon a charming little turquoise shed with a sign that read, “40 cents per gallon of Mountain Clear water.” Although we didn’t have a gallon container, we filled our water bottles with the delicious water.
After our walk and shopping spree, we decided to cool off at Indigo Moo’d Ice Cream, a cute little shop that offers a variety of sweet treats to satisfy any craving.
Inspired by the locals we met, we changed our plans and took our kids to Swensson Park. As soon as we got there, we were thrilled with our decision! The park is designed to look like Coronado Heights and is super kid-friendly. We had a blast playing on the double swings and exploring the park castle. We ended up spending the rest of the afternoon at the park, missing out on our chance to visit the Lindsborg Old Mill, Swedish Heritage Museum and Birger Sandzén Memorial Art Gallery.

We had such a great time in Lindsborg that we’ve already made plans to go back when we take our annual trips to Wichita and Hutchinson. We’re looking forward to exploring more of the town and discovering its hidden gems!
