KCMTA-Heritage Philharmonic 2010 Young Artist Concerto Competition

Kansas City Music Teachers Association is pleased to announce the winners of the KCMTA-Heritage Philharmonic Young Artist Concerto Competition, held January 16th at Schmitt Music. Kansas City Music Teachers Association is a 501(c)3 organization that supports and promotes the study of music through programs, education, scholarships, and events. Overland Park resident Jonathan Park is the 1st place winner of the instrumental category of the competition. Jonathan, a student of Tiberius Klausner, performed the first movement (“Allegro”) of Samuel Barber’s Violin Concerto, Op. 14. He is a senior at Blue Valley West High School where he plays in orchestra as well as the youth symphony.

The 1st place winner of the piano category is Makela Hayford of Lenexa, a student of Nata Dolnik. Makela, freshman at Shawnee Northwest High School, performed the first movement (“Molto allegro con fuoco”) of Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto in G minor, Op 25.

Two Kansas City Missouri residents Peter Shin, cellist and Heather Schouten, pianist were the 2nd place winners receiving a $250 prize. Peter is 18 years old, studies cello with Stephen Pelkey, piano with Joyce Berg and is a senior at Park Hill High School. Heather studies piano with Calvin Permenter at William Jewell College as well as playing violin with the orchestra and symphony along with singing in the choir.

Eighteen year old, Chanel Watkins of Overland Park received Honorable Mention. Chanel studies violin with Pei-In Yang. She is a senior at Blue Valley Northwest High School.

The first place winners will receive a $500 scholarship and perform with the Heritage Philharmonic on May 1st at Blue Springs High School’s Performance Center.
