FREE Family Fun in March!

There are so many fun things to do in Kansas City, it can be overwhelming! But the best news is that many fabulous fun things to do are FREE! These are our top picks for FREE fun in March!

 

Marble Crazy at the Moon

The Facts: March 4 & 5, Moon Marble. "Marble Crazy 2011" will have four demonstration areas and more than 20 marble artists. It will include two lampworking benches, a reproduction Marble Machine from 1905, a Large Wheel Marble Machine, and a furnace working area. Why we Love It: Moon Marble is one of the most magical toy stores you'll ever encounter and Marble Crazy is a blast for the entire family! Watch as marbles are made right before your eyes in every size and color imaginable. This event is extremely popular, so prepare for a crowd. If you have little girls, you may want to treat them to lunch at Madame Hatter's Tea Room nearby.

 

Free Family Fun Night

The Facts: March 4 from 5:00-8:00 PM, Sylvester Powell Jr. Community Center. Do you and your family need a night out, without spending a PENNY? Come to Sylvester Powell Jr. Community Center in Mission, Kansas (6200 Martway, Mission, KS 66202 for Family Night. At 6:15 p.m. watch How to Train Your Dragon on a 72 inch screen in our conference center, so EVERYONE will have a good seat. Other activities that will be available include: indoor playground, open swim for all ages (towels not provided; non-swimmers must be accompanied in the water by a parent/guardian, 16 or older; children under 10 must have a parent in the pool area), open volleyball, open basketball and active fitness video games. Why We Love It: It may be too cold for swimming outside, but a dip in the pool is great fun year round. Add in a favorite family film and fun activities and you have a great evening for the whole family.

Let's Go Outside: Burr Oak Woods

The Facts: March 5 at 10:00 AM, Burr Oak Woods Nature Center. The best way to prepare for National Wildlife week is to bring your family to Burr Oak Woods. Learn about some of the simple but creative activities you can do together to get outside and discover nature. Why We Love It: Generations of KC Kids have grown up with a love for nature and conservation thanks to the terrific programs at Burr Oak Woods. The programs are top notch and kids always leave inspired with new information and ideas.

 

Puppets for the Planet

The Facts: Stone Lion Puppet’s presents their annual event with a fifth season of fun! Eco Game Shows, new puppets, and some of the best talent in the city! Each festival is free and interactive. Build your own puppet, make Aztec Art, learn how to compost, join the drum circle, find out how to recycle better and just have fun as we celebrate the planet we live on with ART! Why We Love It: Stone Lion puts on some of the best performances in KC, but Puppets for the Planet is one of their specialities with a great emphasis on practical knowledge to help kids better learn to take care of the world around them.

 

"Under the Sea Adventure" Exhibit

The Facts: through May 1 at Crown Center. As families walk into an enchanted world of whimsical creatures they find themselves under the sea and instantly greeted by a giant octopus. The adventure takes them to a sunken pirate ship where they discover a treasure chest. They explore a submarine, visit a mermaid’s house, ride a seahorse and step inside a whale’s mouth. The exhibit will include an array of aquatic children’s books...in a waterproof reading area, of course! 

BONUS: Every Saturday in March, meet the Mermaid Princess from noon-4pm! Pose with the beautiful Mermaid Princess in her Under The Sea Castle, in conjunction with the "Under the Sea Adventure" exhibit. Why We Love It: Crown Center's FREE Hands-on Exhibits for kids are a wonderful indoor outing on cold, windy, and rainy days. Meeting the Mermaid Princess on Saturdays is icing on the cake! While you're there, head across the street to Kaleidoscope for some artistic fun!

Overland Park Orchestra FREE concert

The Facts: March 6 at 2:00 PM, Matt Ross Community Center. Join the Overland Park Orchestra for an afternoon of classical music at the Matt Ross Community Center 2pm, Sunday 3/6. This concert is FREE. 913.814.3842 http://oporchestra.com  

Why We Love It: The OP Orchestra does a great job of presenting terrific concerts for families that help to expose children to classical music at an early age in a fun and approachable environment.

Family Fun at the Nelson

The Facts: March 19-20, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Getting to Know George Caleb Bingham: Informal looking and hands-on activities in the galleries. Each month will feature a different kind of family fun in the galleries! www.nelson-atkins.org  

Why We Love It: Kudos to the Nelson for including the entire community, even and especially our children, in your special programs! We love learning about art through the engaging and creative programs offered by the top notch team at the Nelson. Best of all, this program specifically highlights the work of Bingham, the famous statesman and artist who portrayed "Order No. 11" on canvas clearly portraying a pivotal point in the history of the Missouri and Kansas Borders.
