Remembering Bongo Barry

I was saddened to learn of Barry Bernstein’s (better known as Bongo Barry) death this week. My girls and I had the pleasure of seeing one of his “Doin’ the Dewey Decimal Stomp” programs this summer at our local library. It was a fun morning and we’ve been able to relive the fun many times. He recorded our time together and then made the download available to us for free.

I can’t begin to tell you how many times I’ve heard “Bananas, Bananas, Bananas have no bones!” sung by my girls. A catchy and fun tune! During one part of the show, he asked for volunteers to help play some instruments. Both girls immediately raised their hands, and my oldest, Tori, was chosen to be a part of the band. She was so excited and proud to be included. Both she and Ally have volunteered many times to be a part of the band at different shows and have never been chosen. It was a big deal to be brought up in front of everyone and play in the band. I pulled out my camera to capture her time in the spotlight, and wouldn't you know it, the batteries were dead. Oh well. I have the mental picture of her walking up to play the “shakers” in the band and will treasure it.

Thanks, Bongo Barry, for sharing your love of music with Kansas City kids and for making my daughter feel like a star on one sunny summer day.
