Kansas City is home to more than 30 farmers' markets. They range from small markets selling exclusively organic produce to the City Market with more than 140 local vendors. You can purchase fruits, vegetables, plants, herbs, homemade soaps, baked goods, and even live animals. If you are new to the world of the farmers market, this simple guide will get you started!
In addition to markets, another great source is the Missouri Food Finder. Farmers, growers, and local suppliers can enter basic information about the food they sell, location, and contact information so customers can find local food sources at MoFoodFinder.org.
We're also fans of the Facebook Groups Shop Kansas Farms and Shop Missouri Farms where you can make arrangements to buy locally grown food online!

What to Bring to the Farmers Market:
- Comfortable shoes and bottled water
- Shopping bags (Some vendors provide them, but it’s always good to reuse.)
- Cash in small bills (Many vendors do accept credit cards or checks; however, many do not.)
- Wheels! If you plan to purchase large quantities of produce, a wagon or cart will come in handy.
- Coolers with ice if you’re concerned about berries, cheeses, and other new purchases arriving home fresh after a day in the summer sun.
Farmers Market Shopping Tips:
- Know what is in season. Read farmers market sites and Facebook pages before you head out for "in season tips."
- Shop early in the day for the freshest produce OR shop late in the day for the best bargains.
- Let the kids choose something new. Encourage your children to choose a new fruit or vegetable to try. It helps broaden the horizons of young taste buds and teaches kids to explore. They’ll enjoy eating food from a farmer they personally meet!
- Get to know vendors. “Take time to walk the entire market before making your purchases. Observe and talk to the other customers to see which vendors are the most popular and reliable. Most importantly, ask questions. Who grew the product and where did it come from? How was it grown?” says Tim Sullivan of Sullivan’s Greenhouse. “Many vendors supplement their offerings with products purchased from who-knows-where. Some vendors don't produce anything they sell. It takes time to get to know your vendors. If you aren't satisfied with something you bought, let the vendor know about it the next week. His response will tell you a lot about him.”

“Opening the Independence Uptown Market has been carefully considered in the City’s plans to increase public access to our city-operated facilities slowly and cautiously,” Mayor Eileen Weir said. “I have worked closely with our City staff and business partners to design a pre-Phase 1 reopening plan for the Independence Uptown Market that is acceptable to all parties, and I am pleased that over the past 48-hours our vendors have agreed to a plan that meets the city’s public health expectations. The Farmers’ Market is a popular and valued asset to our community. I am hopeful and optimistic that vendors and patrons will abide by the safety precautions put in place. If precautions are not followed, we will be forced to reconsider this decision.”
Approximately 10 local farmers will participate in this weekend’s Farmers’ Market with more to follow on coming Saturdays. Patrons will be provided a listing of all vendors in attendance as well as the produce or food products they have available when they arrive on Saturday. Drivers will be asked to enter the Uptown Market from the northeast entrance off of Liberty and will find traffic navigations leading them to Liberty from both the east and west. Drivers will then drive west around the Market. If they have completed their purchases on the north side, they may exit on Osage. Those with further purchases will turn left and travel east along the backside of the Market by exiting right on Liberty.
Vendors will be required to wear face masks and food grade gloves with changes between patrons and handling payments.
Farmers’ Market patrons are asked to stay in their vehicle and are encouraged to wear a cloth face covering. For those that do not have a vehicle and would like to walk up, they are asked to go up to a waiting area near the Market Master trailer located at the northeast entrance to the Market off of Liberty. Staff will assist them with their orders. Individuals will not be allowed to walk through the Market. The Market Master trailer is also where those using SNAP benefits can make their exchanges for tokens. Cash or SNAP are the preferred payment methods.

Masks are optional to both vendors and patrons.
