In Kansas City, we enjoy many “u-pick farms” across the metro area where you may pick blueberries, strawberries, apples, peaches, fresh vegetables, and more. It's the season for delicious u-pick produce!
Please note, that some farms from previous years are no longer in business or no longer offer u-pick. This list will get you started! If you know of a patch to add to the list, email Kristina@KCParent.com. This list may not be reprinted in print or online without permission.
Produce Picking Tips:

THE RULES OF ENGAGEMENT
THIS IS HOW IT WORKS:
-We are a corn and soybean farm, and we also plant a few sunflowers. We started planting them in the 1970s. Feel free to walk into the field or gaze at them from afar. Sunflowers seem to bring people joy and we are happy to share their beauty.
-The field does not have business hours (it’s a field!), but if it’s dark and you’re up to no good, go home! Go on, get! GET!
-Week days and mornings are the paths less traveled. Although traffic hasn’t really been an issue since the incident we have named “Carmageddon 2016,” to help with any possible issues, try to come at an “off” time.
-The best sunflower is one not picked, so try to preserve the beauty for those after you. If you “accidentally” pick one, just know that they will probably wilt and die before you get home. Also, if you have a kid that just really wants one, be prepared for that same kid to scream when they realize there is a bug on it. This generally happens when you’re driving home… (You’ve been warned!) Also, if you do pick one, please leave a dollar for each in one of the red boxes. As always, weeds are free. Donations are always welcome. (Even if the flowers don’t get picked, there is quite a lot of loss from trampling.) A sunflower in the field only lasts a couple of weeks; a picked one even less. Whatever you do, DO NOT pick sunflowers to use as props or "just because" and then throw them on the ground. This is disrespectful and makes Farmer Ted cranky. R E S P E C T! Find out what it means to me! (Sing it! Remember it!)
-***PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHERS*** Remember that if you're making $ off our field, a donation in the box is a lovely and much appreciated gesture. Don’t set up shop. And PRETTY PLEASE refrain from using the Grinter Farms name on your advertisements. It gives a false impression of endorsement. (p.s. A lot of you are still failing at this.)
-We added a whole block of restrooms this year!!! Just kidding! No! No we did not. There are no restrooms. It’s a field and we don’t charge admission, so “holding it” is the price you pay.
-If you lost something in the field and it’s big enough to damage a combine…find it! Trust me that you don’t want to buy us a new combine. We have found strollers, ladders, and even large, upholstered chairs.
-If you find a sign that says, "Private Drive," that's exactly what it means. Turn around and don’t go that way. If you see someone driving there, assume that they own the road; or assume that those individuals find themselves immune to rules.
- Still no restrooms.
- DO NOT park on the street AT ALL. It’s just not safe and the sheriff doesn’t like it. Consider yourself warned. Slow down and watch out for people.
-We love friendly dogs, but not everybody does so please remember that if you bring Sparky, put your fur baby on a leash…and for the love of everything good, please PICK UP after him. I have a super large dog and tiny hands. It’s a challenge, but if I can do it, you can, too. And (this is super important) if you are kind enough to bag it, please take it home with you. We don’t have trash cans.
-Do not come and set up your food truck…I mean, we do love tacos…but no.
-We would never leave our trash in your yard, so don’t leave yours in ours. Yes, this also applies to diapers!
-Although we considered planting the field in our climate-controlled superdome this year, we opted for outside in nature. This means it will be hot and buggy. Honeybees are a given and are our friends. We go to great lengths to protect them. They are not at all interested in stinging you as they are just busy doing their jobs. There will be bugs!
-I can’t stress this enough: There are no restrooms!!!!!!!!!!!! (It’s a field.)
-Our farm is just that…a farm. This is our livelihood, not a hobby. We grow corn and soybeans, rye as a cover crop, and a few sunflowers. We grow the flowers for birdfeed. They are an actual crop! Nothing makes farmer Ted more irritated then finding picked sunflowers thrown on the grown. Our farm is not a playground. If you see a tractor, round bale, grain bin, barn, semi, or any other equipment; we didn’t put it there to be climbed on or into. Please be respectful.
-After careful consideration, we opted not to put sidewalks in the field. It was a thoughtful suggestion, but we just can’t fit the combine between the concrete paths.
-If you can’t find the answer here, but you’re still questioning whether something is permitted, the answer is probably “no.”
-There will never be restrooms. Ever.
-We do not charge admission or a parking fee and have no intention of doing so. This is not an event or a festival. It is just a crop that we’ve been growing for nearly 50 years on the wrong side of the state. People came to see the beauty and we didn’t tell them no. We continue to share our field because, truly, if you have the chance to share joy, why wouldn’t you?
The last and most important thing: ENJOY! Take a few minutes to just take it all in. Look out for one another. Kindness is contagious. We are not here for ourselves.

- Status as of 7/24/2022: This drought is no joke. No rain in four weeks. Our pumpkins are looking pretty sad. Most of them are now a month behind. In order to produce a crop we had to do something. We got this irrigation system out and brought it back to life. The last time this system was used was in 2012. My first year ever growing pumpkins. Sitting out in the field tonight watching the water fall is a huge relief. But it also makes me think. The last time I sat and watched this gun water plants Red Barn Ranch did not exist, these kids splashing and having fun in the water were not born, I had no idea what running a business looked like. We’ve all come a long ways. Sometimes it’s nice to sit back and forget about all the things that you’re worrying about and look at the things that you’ve accomplished and just revel in the moment. We will get through this drought. We will have pumpkins. And just like these kids are doing, we will all have a blast this season! Looking forward to the best Fall ever!!
