Dolores Huerta: Crusader for Workers
Theatre for Young America 30 W. Pershing Rd., Kansas City, Missouri
A new musical play premiere based on the childhood and early career of Dolores Huerta with original music by singer/songwriter Danny Cox and book by Gene Mackey. A grandchild of Mexican immigrants, Dolores Clara Fernandez was born on April 10, 1930 in Dawson, a small mining town in the mountains of northern New Mexico. Her father Juan Fernández, a farm worker and miner by trade, was a union activist and won a seat in the New Mexico legislature. Dolores founded the Agricultural Workers Association and pressed local governments for barrio improvements. She was inducted into the California Hall of Fame. In 2011 she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama.
