It’s Halloween weekend which means there are tons of great events all over town, culminating with trick or treating on Sunday. Luckily, the girls are off school on Monday, so we can stay up late and enjoy!
Growing up in St. Louis, there were always two big things to consider for Halloween. The first was your costume and the second, which was just as important as the costume choice, was the joke you would tell. In St. Louis when you trick or treat, at each home before receiving candy, you are expected to tell a joke. I didn’t realize this was specific to St. Louis until my first Halloween in Kansas City. The trick or treaters arrived at my door and held out their bags. I asked them to first tell me their joke and I got some strange looks and you could hear crickets chirping. I was quickly informed that I should just hand out the candy and not ask for a joke. Since I grew up with the joke telling, I always feel like something is missing on Halloween when my girls don’t spend weeks agonizing over what joke to tell.
In case you do need a joke for Halloween, here was a favorite in my home when I was young:
“How do you get a handkerchief to dance?”
“Put a little ‘boogie’ in it!”
