Mission
The 509th Bomb Wing is part of Air Force Global Strike Command and is the host wing at Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo. The Bomb Wing and its fleet of B-2 Spirit bombers serve as part of the Air Force's conventional and strategic combat force. The Bomb Wing can project U.S airpower anywhere around the world from home station and employ a wide range of precision-guided munitions.
Organizations and Functions
The 509th Bomb Wing oversees the 509th Operations Group, 509th Maintenance Group, 509th Mission Support Group and 509th Medical Group, which handle various aspects of the wing's mission.-The 509th Operations Group is the flying component of the 509th Bomb Wing, assigned to Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo. It manages and employs all of the USAF's B-2 Spirit stealth bombers, and also employs a robust fleet of T-38 Talon trainer aircraft. The 509th OG is the USAF’s premier bomber unit and sole B-2 Spirit schoolhouse, training all B-2 pilots in the active duty Air Force and Air National Guard.-The 509th Maintenance Group maintains the nation's only long-range stealth bomber. The group provides full spectrum organizational and field-level maintenance and munitions support for the 509th Bomb Wing. The group supports long-range strategic airpower with complete maintenance and munitions packages for combat deployment and also coordinates and engineers improvements with the program management office and higher headquarters.-The 509th Mission Support Group is comprised of six squadrons with more than 1,800 Air Force and contract personnel in the Air Force's only B-2 wing. The group provides unique support to a unique mission, including emergency operations, readiness, security, construction, communications, fire protection, human resources, food services, fuels, transportation, supply and Airmen and family support.-The 509th Medical Group provides trusted medical support, community health and wellness and develops and sustains mission-ready medics to support Combatant and Joint Force Commanders. The group also provides health services for more than 12,000 beneficiaries.As the host unit at Whiteman, the 509th BW also controls the special staff functions of the inspector general, wing plans, the chaplain, staff judge advocate, arms control and treaty compliance, command post, public affairs, history and safety. DEPT OF THE AIR FORCE
The Department of the Air Force is headquartered in the Pentagon, Washington D.C. The service is organized in nine major commands throughout the world which provide combat aircraft, airlift, refueling, reconnaissance and other support to the Unified Combatant Commands. The Air Force also has more than three dozen field operating agencies and direct reporting units which directly support the mission by providing unique services.
