“The Man from Missouri,” the 33rd president of the United States, Harry S. Truman hails from Independence. You can learn about his childhood at the Truman Farm, his humble lifestyle at the Truman Home in Independence and his presidency at the Truman Presidential Library. There, visitors participate in interactive exhibits, including a replica Truman Oval Office; they also explore Truman artifacts and special exhibits. Visit other historic sites including Vaile Mansion, the Bingham-Waggoner Estate, the Jail Museum and the National Frontier Trails Museum in Independence, many of which host special events throughout the year and are decorated for the holidays.

Celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 2017 in their new home at the Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, the Johnson County Museum offers innovative, engaging, and challenging programs that will inspire all learners to discover a sense of place and spark excitement about history. Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm in Johnson County brings 1850s farming to life with stagecoach rides, family programs and a working blacksmith shop. Missouri Town 1855 and Shoal Creek Living History Museum are two historic villages teaching pioneer life through fun events, festivals and programs. Shawnee Town 1929 is a village where families explore life in the 1920s firsthand.
