We started off our vacation to Dallas by getting lost. Well, I suppose we weren't exactly lost. However, we were hungry. Therefore, it felt like we were lost when we spent more than an hour looking for some place to eat near our hotel.
Yet, aside from the being hungry part, the beginning of our vacation was wonderful.
I suppose I might have forgotten to mention that the kids didn't go to Dallas with us. Thanks to their very kind grandparents, my husband and I were able to have a little getaway. That would explain why the hour in the car seemed so wonderful. It was the start of three days of adult conversation.
It was also the start of not doing dishes, laundry, or helping children be kind to one another.
We ate out at restaurants that didn't have play places. I'm not sure if the restaurants even had chicken nuggets on their menus.
One afternoon, we took our time enjoying the Dallas Museum of Art. Another day, we spent several hours at a water park pretending that we were the kids. On the way back to the hotel, we stopped for ice cream and didn't have to share.
The rest of the time we talked without interruption. We slept in until we decided to get up.
It was lovely.
Yesterday morning, as we took one last look at our hotel room, making sure we hadn't forgotten anything, I sighed while I said, “Good bye freedom.”
My husband chuckled and I could tell he knew just what I meant. Yet, he said, “Yeah, but you love your kids more.”
It's true, I do. I may not have missed the bickering or the dirty diapers, but I sure did miss them! It's good to be home. So good that I just might cheerfully share my next ice cream with my favorite little ones.
Are you going anywhere fun this summer? Will you take the kids? Do tell.
