January in KC means snow and ice! Historically our kids have more snow days in January than any other winter month. So how can you make a snow day a fun day?
Turn off the screens and try some of these ideas:
1. Call a friend who has to stay home from work when school is called off- offer to watch her kids for half the day so she doesn’t have to miss a full day of work. Your kids will love having friends to share part of the day with!
2. Bake someone happy! Check the pantry for the ingredients to bake a batch of goodies.
3. Get out the shovels and brooms. Let the kids burn off some energy by shoveling and sweeping the front walk or driveway at your house or at the home of an elderly neighbor.
4. Write a few letters. Let the children draw pictures or write letters to some out of town family members. Its the perfect day to finish up those holiday thank you notes.
5. The local libraries are likely to be open even if school is closed. Once the roads are cleared head to the library to pick out a few great books. Make a bowl of popcorn and send everyone to a comfortable chair for some quiet reading time!
6. There’s nothing wrong with trying to get something meaningful accomplished around the house. Recruit your children to help with a project you’ve been avoiding. My boys are much more willing to spend an hour cleaning the toy room if I help for a few minutes here and there and if there is the promise of a fun reward when the job is done properly!
