The first real snow fall of the season is full of promise, anticipation, and potential. Waking up yesterday morning to see a fresh, white blanket of snow covering the ground brought back that same feeling I got as a kid when I knew school had been cancelled. My mind started racing with all the fun that was waiting for us on the first snow day of the season.
The day began with homemade pancakes with mini chocolate chips. Homemade pancakes with chocolate chips seems to be the "Wheaties" breakfast on a cold, snowy morning. After gobbling down the pancakes, it was time to put on our snow gear and get ready to go sledding. My daughter seemed more interested in getting to see her breath outside than she was to go sledding, but nonetheless, she was still very happy to get out and play.
Sledding seems to be an American pastime on snowy days that all children ought to experience. It's almost a rite of passage or even a trade off, for when school gets cancelled. Close the books for a day and get out the sled to play! We enjoyed sledding down hills with Ava and making a memory with her that can only be enjoyed with good snowfalls like yesterday.
Once our toddler had reached her cold threshold, we decided it was time to pack up and head home for lunch. We ate hot dogs in crescent rolls with cheese, and afterwards, Ava picked out a movie to watch with us under a blanket. We hardly ever eat hot dogs and very rarely does Ava get to watch a movie, so she was ecstatic to get to partake in both. Cinderella was the movie of choice, and she enjoyed a special chocolate and peanut butter cookie toward the end of the movie.
After all of our fun today, one of the best memories from the day was getting to share it with people who are special to us. And for Ava, one of those people is Daddy. My husband decided to take the day off, considering the treacherous road conditions and the promise of non-stop snow all day, and the day was well spent making some of the first memories of 2011!
