Poppy's Ice Cream Shop

Whether you have lived in a town your whole life, or just moved there, it’s always great to explore your town. A great way of doing this is visiting small restaurants.  Most towns have them, but you have to look. Burger and ice cream joints are some of my favorites. I remember going to one in our town when I was about 7 years old. They had awesome cheese sticks, and served their hot dogs on a hamburger bun. Another one we loved to go to had the BEST milkshakes I have ever put in my mouth. I’m talkin’ Winstead’s, but better! They were SO cold, and SO icy! These made Winstead’s look like McDonald’s or Dairy Queen’s!  Unfortunately, this place was in the middle of rural Kentucky and I’m not sure I’ll ever get to visit there again.  Pity…  But fear not! It just takes a bit of hunting, and you, too,  can find a restaurant worth ranting about!

A few days ago, my sisters and I decided to go on what my Dad called a “Renegade Redneck Restaurant Tour.”  (He got this term from one of his college professors who went on these tours with his students.) We went to Poppy’s Ice Cream & Coffee House in downtown Lee’s Summit (307 Southeast Douglas Street).  Formerly known as “DOCS Sorbet & Ice Cream Co.,” Poppy’s has been in business for nearly 15 years.

My sisters Meg and Claire both got Mint Chocolate Chip cups.

Claire’s review:

Poppy’s was a cute little shop, I liked the cute round tables, but the problem with those was that they were too small. That shop might not be the best for a large group. The decoration was really cute and quaint and I liked it a lot.

The ice cream was awesome! At least, I would recommend the mint and [the] brownie/whatever that Annie had. It was a little crunchy (like it had been [re]frozen) --not exactly the texture I was looking for, though it was very good. I loved the flavor, it was definitely the best part of the ice cream.

Over all, I’d say it was a great little shop.

Meg’s review of Poppy’s Coffee and Ice Cream House:

Poppy’s was very quaint, the sort of place you would go to with a friend, or show relatives from out of town.  The ice cream was hand-dipped, which I prefer over soft serve.  I noticed that there were a few ice cream flavors that I hadn’t heard of before, (like green tea,) yet still all the classics, like mint chocolate chip (which is what I got).  It had a very small-business-y feel, like this store in particular was important to the owners and employees.  The space would be tight for a large gathering, but would fit well for a group of less than ten. Overall, I really enjoyed my visit to Poppy’s;  it was a great part of my day.

Annie's review:

I, Annie,  got a brownie sundae. Vanilla ice cream on top of a brownie covered in whipped cream and hot fudge. It was wonderful to say the least. Being a lover of most things chocolate-- specifically hot fudge-- this was great. If I hadn’t gotten a small it would have been too rich, but since I did, it was the perfect amount. As Claire mentioned,  the flavor of the ice cream was really good! It had more vanilla bean flavor than most French vanillas, let alone plain vanilla.  I often find plain vanilla to be mostly just sweet. The taste I snatched from my sisters of the Mint Chocolate Chip was very good too, with a strong mint flavor.

Visiting Poppy’s Ice Cream & Coffee House is a wonderful excuse to grab a snack and maybe even do some shopping while you explore Downtown Lee’s Summit.
