Gnome Homes... in Kansas City

Note: As of June 2014, we are sad to report that Firefly Forest has been shut down. It was fun while it lasted!

It was a Friday afternoon when I saw postings about the gnome homes popping up in southern Overland Park. I immediately thought of the girls – who are more into fairies than gnomes – and knew I had to take them right away! So, I packed snacks and waters and we headed over on our fairy hunt right after school.

We parked at DeAnna Rose and headed south on Switzer and then west on the trail (it is right behind DeAnna Rose). It is about a 10-minute walk before you come to the first gnome home, nestled in the tree. The hand-crafted door opens and closes and the girls couldn’t get over all of the tiny details.

Then, back-tracking to Switzer we stayed on the trail which heads under the street and we headed east on the trail. It is only about a 5 minute walk to the “firefly forest” sign and shortly after that the next home, which is just as cute as the first. We decided to explore even further into the forest when we found the third home – and this was the girls’ favorite by far! It had a swing, and included a bottle of bright yellow liquid labeled “firefly juice.” They couldn’t get over the mystery of it all!

It is a fairy adventure well worth checking out next time you’re in the area. Enjoy!
